A terrible accident early Saturday morning (24/3) has left local rock band, Navicula’s bass player, Made Indra in a critical condition fighting for his life in Sanglah hospital and his girlfriend Afiriana Dewi (Afi) dead at the scene.
The accident happened on Jalan Raya Sakah, Sukawati, Gianyar at approximately 12.45am after a Navicula show in Ubud Friday night. Made, who was driving, and Afi were heading back to Denpasar when the car, apparently at high speed, swerved to the right, and hit a tree with the left side of the car on the right side of the road.
Both victims were evacuated by ambulance and Afriana Dewi was pronounced dead in Ari Canti Hospital, Mas, Ubud. Made was taken directly from that hospital to Sanglah in Denpasar.
The tragedy was announced on the band’s Instagram account @naviculamusic on Saturday morning. “We are in mourning that around midnight last night a car driven by Made Indra was involved in a fatal traffic accident in Gianyar. Made and his partner Afiriana Dewi were returning to Denpasar after a music show in Ubud,” the account wrote. “Both were severely injured and Afi could not be saved and died, Made is still in critical condition at Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar,” it added.
The body of Afi was repatriated to her family in Yogyakarta on Saturday morning and a funeral was held on Sunday.
Made’s cousin, Oka Pramana, said that Made had suffered serious injuries in the accident. Initially he was treated at Ari Canti Hospital in Gianyar. Then referred to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar where he has been in a coma and on life support since the accident, with multiple broken bones and head injuries.
While Bali’s music community is reeling from this tragic news, witnesses at the hospital this morning say doctors are operating right now in a last effort to save Made’s life.
