It would appear that some locals have become addicted to social media. Tribune Bali spoke to a number of people yesterday about their addictions.
“I can’t move on from social media, especially Instagram. I will spend up to two hours checking it if there is a holiday,” said Setianingsih, a Denpasar SMK teacher to tribunnews.com on Tuesday. She also said that Instagram is a main entertainment for her. When she wakes up, she would grab her phone and open Instagram. “Usually I will check the celebrity photos, my friends’ posts or funny and interesting videos,” she added. She admitted that she is also a Twitter and WhatsApp addict.
Meanwhile, another local lad, Julio Saputra, a university student, said that he opens Instagram two hours a day. “I check the Instagram stories,” he said. He also said that sometimes he bought products online thru Instagram. “I will see them on Instagram first,” he said.
A Denpasar journalist, Ade Grantika, had another opinion. He saw Instagram as entertainment and to check if there was any breaking news. “The news spreads fast on Instagram. I can find the news updates before I get to the location,” he said. He admitted that he uses Instagram 4 hours per day.
According to We Are Social and Hootsuite, Instagram holds the 7th position in social media with 800 million users around the world as of January 2018. The biggest users are 18-24 years old, with total of 245 million users (128 million of them are female and 117 million are male). The annual social media user growth in Indonesia is around 23%, which is the 3rd ranking after Saudi Arabia and India. The average length of time per day is also coming in at 3rd after the Philippines and Brazil with 3 hours and 23 minutes.
Meanwhile, according to databoks.co.id, Indonesia comes in at 3rd place again with active Instagram users with 55 million in total. The first is United States with 110 million active users and 2nd is Brazil with 57 million users. Instagram is at number four for the most used social media after YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
Well, that’s a lot of hours to be wasting in a day.
