Another hopeful in the 2018 Bali gubernatorial elections, and present Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, has stepped up the rhetoric on the future development of Bali, firmly rejecting the reclamation of Benoa Bay.

According to Wiryastuti, the reclamation project is contrary to the Balinese concept of Tri Hita Karana, which refers to the natural balance between humans and the environment on the island.

“Do not exploit Bali, because Bali is the axis of the archipelago. Indonesia’s strength is in Bali and must be kept sacred and holy, and that’s without this reclamation,” she told BaliPost.

She hoped that the Benoa development, by not being in accordance with the concept of Tri Hita Karana, would not cause the destruction of Bali.

She also said Balinese leaders should listen to the aspirations of their people.

“Leaders must be firm in their attitude related to this issue and the case must be resolved in accordance with the community’s choice,” she said.

Therefore, the Balinese leaders must be courageous enough to hear and speak the will of the people because they are the elected leaders of the people.

“Bali leaders must be firm about reclamation and must be resolved so it doesn’t become an issue without clarity and settlement,” she said.
