A fire occurred on busy Gili Trawangan last night, Thursday (29/6), which destroyed 36 rooms of the Gili Klapa Hostel.

Fortunately, 53 guests staying at the hotel, owned by a businessman from Surabaya, managed to save themselves.

“The details that we have are that 52 foreigners and one local person were involved,” said Head of Police Public Relations of NTB, AKBP Tri Budi Pangastuti, this morning.

He also stated that the dozens of guests were staying in 22 rooms of the 36 rooms that were burned. “All the guests were able to save themselves safely,” he added.

According to a number of witnesses, the fire erupted from one of the rooms on the second floor of the hotel. Not long after, the fire spread to other parts, including the generator room.

The surrounding neighbours, together with guests, helped to extinguish the fire by using makeshift equipment. According to a report in BaliPost it took a number of hours for the fire to be extinguished. “In addition to the rooms, guests’ luggage was also burned. Thankfully, there weren’t any casualties,” said Tri Budi.

Losses are estimated to reach billions of rupiah. Regarding the cause, the police have not been able to give a conclusion. The initial suspicion is that it was due to an electric short circuit.

Police have been deployed to further investigate the scene. “The witnesses have been questioned but the cause is still under investigation,” he concluded.
