Residents and the visitors of Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu, were shocked to find a dead body on the beach on Tuesday afternoon. The body was confirmed to be a German tourist, Heinrich Johannes Weilandt, 64, who was suspected to have been dragged out to sea by strong currents when he was swimming.
The Head of Badung police, Commander Yudit Satriya Hananta, said that they had already questioned several witnesses related to the incident. One of the witness, I Gede Alit Pitnawa, 34, who stays in the area, stated that he saw the victim swimming in front of Intercontinental Canggu Hotel at around 2.30pm.
He then saw the man being dragged out to sea and vanished. Not long later, the victim was found floating face-down in the water and not breathing.
Pitnawa and his friend, Adigian, 24, used a surf board to move the body to the shore.
According to Denpost the victim was given artificial resuscitation on the beach but to no effect.
“The dead body was taken to Sanglah Hospital using a Badung District Red Cross ambulance at 3.10pm. The man was staying at Papillon Hotel on Jalan Echo Beach, Banjar Canggu,” the Head of the Polres told balipost.com.
