South Denpasar Police arrested four suspected thieves in a hotel on Jalan Kediri, Tuban, Badung yesterday and in the process shot two in the leg as they tried to escape.

The men from Palembang, Sumatra and Bangka Belitung aged between 25 and 45 are suspected of breaking into four houses, as reported by Bali Post.

“They deliberately came to Bali to steal, which is not unusual for thieves like this Bangka and Palembang group,” said Head of South Denpasar Police, Iptu Bangkit Dananjaya on Tuesday evening.

It is alleged the perpetrators targeted Lely Armayani’s house on Jalan Kerta Lestasi, Suwung, South Denpasar, last Sunday (8/10). At around 2pm, the victim and her family were visiting her friends in Kuta. At 6pm the victim arrived home to see the door broken open.

The victim checked her valuables, and found many missing documents such as her work documents, passport of her foreign husband, a laptop, camera, US dollars and Singapore dollars, worth approx. Rp 400 million. Subsequently the victim reported the theft to the South Denpasar Police.

Based on the testimony of witnesses the police managed to track the perpetrator’s hiding place at a hotel on Jalan Kediri, Kuta. On Sunday at around 10pm, police raided the hotel and arrested the perpetrators. “On the one day (Sunday), the gang is alleged to have robbed four houses, three houses in Klungkung and one in South Denpasar,” said Iptu Bangkit.

After searching the room of the perpetrators, the police secured evidence of three laptops, two notebooks, one iPad, four hand phones, one camera, one watch, and various pieces of gold jewelry including necklaces and bracelets.

The tools used in the robberies – three large screwdrivers and a small crowbar – were also found.

“They flew to Bali on October 7 and committed the crimes the next day,” he said.

Bangkit also told reporters that the group had already packed to return to their home with the stolen goods wrapped neatly. “Their MO is like this. After the action, they quickly escape and then, a few days later they come back for more action. We are still developing this case,” said Bangkit.
