The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has stated that it deplores the fake news surrounding the eruption of Mount Agung being spread on social media platforms.

“When thousands of residents around Mount Agung are being evacuated, there are still people who spread misleading and false news. This is a hoax and it’s deplorable,” said Head of Data and Public Relations of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, in his twitter account @Sutopo_BNPB, Sunday evening.

According to DETIK, Sutopo was responding to one of the hoaxes circulating on Whatsapp that stated Mount Agung was going to erupt tonight (last night).

There is also a fake news video depicting the eruption of a volcano. Sutopo said the video was from the eruption of Mount Sinabung in 2015, and as is well clear to all following the situation, Mount Agung has not yet erupted.

Sutopo asserted that the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), nor all the volcano experts in the world, can determine exactly if and when Mount Agung will erupt.
