Unseasonably heavy rain has caused disruption at Ngurah Rai International Airport this morning.

As reported by Berita Satu, Head of Public Relations, Arie Ahsanurrohim commented that 13 planes were unable to take off and a further 7 unable to land.  This was due to bad weather causing limited visibility.

Both domestic and international flights were effected and in addition a further 12 aircraft were said to be circling in airspace above Bali as it was not possible to land. Regulations require that visibility to land is 800m, but visibility at the airport has been as low as 100m this morning, and a notice was issued for the period from 7.54am – 9.30am.

Arie also noted that relevant authorities would continue to monitor weather developments with the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Due to the temporary closure of the airport a number of aircraft were forced to land in Surabaya, Java, and thousands of passengers experienced delays at Bali airport.
